  • I have something very vital to disclose with you, but I found it difficult to express myself here, since it's a public site.Could you please get back to me via my direct email(susanwalphonsus001@gmail.com) for more details.
    Have a nice day,

  • Greetings Sandra,

I'm Mike McQueen, teacher librarian and founder of http://www.GettingBoysToRead.com. Like many school districts, we are in a financial crises. Our school board recently proposed to eliminate ALL 20+ middle school teacher librarians and also cut all 90+ elementary schools to half time. Since we are the biggest district in all of Colorado, we worry this will cause other districts to follow suit.

We launched an online movement and are going to do our best to put up a good fight. If possible, please visit our Facebook page and "Like" us http://www.facebook.com/SupportSchoolLibraries . Adding a positive comment and sharing with your friends would help our morale as well. The board finalizes the budget soon so your timely support would be greatly appreciated!

    Sincerely,

    Mike McQueen

  • Hi Sandy, Sounds like you are just about into the swing of it! Our students start Aug 27. I won't open the library for a couple of weeks after that. We'll see. It depends on how successful we are at importing our student data from the office's database (PEIMS). They are using RSCCC this year for all of that so I don't know if it will be successful. If not, we can import student data from last year's info from the intermediate school. It just won't be as accurate or complete so then we'll have to fix it all.
We do use AR but we are not on the web version. I have the data from the students at the intermediate. That reminds me, I'll need to get it from the school across town as well because all of the boundary lines have been re-drawn this year.

You found our old website. It is still up but here is the link to the new one:
    http://ccisd.esc11.net/sclee/site/default.asp

About del.icio.us, I guess its the tagging thing that confuses me. I used to use IKeepBookmarks.net for my always available bookmarks. Now I'm using Google Bookmarks. I really haven't had to find them "on the fly" but I guess I would have to log into Google to get them. I'm using the Google toolbar here at home (per husband's request) so they are always available here.
Good luck with the open house already. I think we have a few days before we have to deal with that! Our teachers have had to spend 2 full days sitting in in-service sessions. Luckliy, the librarians got out of it this year!
    Good luck.
  • Hi Sandra. I didn't have any luck getting to your webpage. I googled S. C. Lee school and found :
S C Lee Junior High School
    1205 Courtney Ln
    Copperas Cove, TX 76522
    Coryell County

Is that you? I didn't see a library link on the page though.

Hosting vendor displays is a great idea. Nice to be in touch with the other district librarians at the beginning of the year. And helping teachers create their own webpages is an excellent way to hook them into the library. I'm hoping your years is the best so far. Keep in touch.

Oh, del.icio.us allows you to get to your bookmarks from both school and home. Or say, you are in a teacher's classroom and they want to see something you've discovered, but you don't remember how to get there. You open del.icio.us and your bookmarks are all there. I had trouble figuring it out when I took an online class this summer. It was my introduction to "tagging" which was difficult for me to grasp, but once I got it, and understood the beauty of del.icio.us, I can see lots of value in it.

I've been real busy helping to set up our new web-based AR. Does your school use accelerated reader? When do your students start? Ours come Aug. 27th, but tomorrow night is the 6th grade orientation and we check out textbooks that night. Then the seventh and eighth graders get theirs the first two days of school. We take one day to clear away the textbooks and then open the library on Thursday. I'm ready for another fun year.

Keep in touch. I'd like to hear more about the voice thing you are learning. And how you will use it.
  • Hi Sandra. Have you gone back to school yet? Made any collaboration contacts this early in the year?

I learned about wikkis and del.icio.us this summer, so i started a librarians' wikki for the five librarians in our district to work together to plan our trip to our state conference in November and then hopefully use it to plan our big Board Presentation the second semester. I also shared del.icio.us with our computer lab teacher. She was impressed with its potential and appreciated being introduced to something new that can make her professional work easier and more efficient. So I feel really good about the beginning of the year.

I hope you are feeling positive, too, and that you reach out to a department or some colleagues who haven't been avid library users before. Let me know how it's going.
  • Thanks, Sandra. This is my first Ning, or any online social group, so I'm not sure how it all works. But I do not like seeing that my page says I do not have any friends. Will you also be my friend? Maybe you can coach me a little on this whole Ning thing! Also, how do I remove my age from under my picture?
