Name of Your School / Library / Organization:

I'm a teacher, solo librarian and solo techie at a small school in rural Vermont. Being so isolated from other teacher librarians and geeks, I've been keeping a blog and doing as much reading and writing online as I can fit in. I read many of your blogs, and I'm excited to see you here in this new space as well. Glad to be here. Pam Burke The SurRural Librarian

  • Greetings Pam,

I'm Mike McQueen, teacher librarian and founder of http://www.GettingBoysToRead.com. Like many school districts, we are in a financial crises. Our school board recently proposed to eliminate ALL 20+ middle school teacher librarians and also cut all 90+ elementary schools to half time. Since we are the biggest district in all of Colorado, we worry this will cause other districts to follow suit.

We launched an online movement and are going to do our best to put up a good fight. If possible, please visit our Facebook page and "Like" us http://www.facebook.com/SupportSchoolLibraries . Adding a positive comment and sharing with your friends would help our morale as well. The board finalizes the budget soon so your timely support would be greatly appreciated!

    Sincerely,

    Mike McQueen

  • I'd say I'm pretty lucky to have my dream job at 30. It is a bit stressful. Like you, I am solo in a smallish school. And no one here really knows what a library can be. So I have done a lot of convincing. They also had no idea how much it costs to create a library, so it's going bit by bit. They built the room before I came, so I had no say in construction. I have a lot to say about it now, but I'll make do with what I have. I'm struggling a bit with finding contract furniture vendors whose stuff I like. Any suggestions? I'm trying to make it fun while staying within a pretty small budget. We also need more classrooms and a theater that holds the whole school. We are a performing arts school after all.

So, you are welcome any time. Marlboro isn't too far. I hope to get a lot of it set up over the summer so it can be functional and I can run program in the fall. Right now I stare at a computer screen most of the day. But I do have a few books and they are definitely going out. And I teach some database lessons, which staff and students alike are awed by. It's kinda fun.

    Anyway, thanks for your interest.
