  Greetings Nancy,

  I'm Mike McQueen, teacher librarian and founder of http://www.GettingBoysToRead.com. Like many school districts, we are in a financial crises. Our school board recently proposed to eliminate ALL 20+ middle school teacher librarians and also cut all 90+ elementary schools to half time. Since we are the biggest district in all of Colorado, we worry this will cause other districts to follow suit. We launched an online movement and are going to do our best to put up a good fight.

  I apologize for not getting back to you sooner. I've just been swamped with stuff on many levels. How about my meeting you in Sonoma tomorrow morning for coffee and a bagel somewhere? If that works, give me a call 769-0566 (home) and leave a message. I could also meet you after school (4:30 or so) in Sonoma on Monday. Let me know if either of those options work.

  Thanks for the "heads up". I did visit the district's web page earlier this week and saw the posting. I think I will go ahead and see what happens. By the way, I heard from Susan Thompson this week after a long time. She left Vintage High and is the now a librarian at a small private boarding school in the Santa Ynez Valley, near Santa Barbara. Her husband became the wine maker for Sanford Winery (first winery visited in the film Sideways). I can send you her e-mail if you'd like.

  Hi Nancy,
  I just wanted you to know that PCS has posted the Casa library position. I think it closes at the end of the month (3/28 is what I have in my head--but you should check the disrict Web page). Even if you don't seriously want to consider it, you can always apply and get the interview for experience! We'll definitely get together in April.

  Hi Nancy,
  Generally speaking, the farther you are from downtown the cheaper the property. Salt Lake and Makakilo are kind of "out there" on my geo-radar, although distances in Hawaii are not the same as they are on the Mainland! It's probably because of traffic issues. The drive from town to Salt Lake or Makakilo is "far" because you can get get stuck in bad traffic. Certainly not all the time, but believe me, traffic is an issue on Oahu. Yes, the closer you are to UH the better. Makiki, Nuuanu, Punch Bowl, lower Manoa (the valley where UH is located), Ala Moana, Nuuanu, and Kakaako (close to downtown/Aloha Tower) are great. It's easy to get around by foot and public transportation as well. So it's off to China! Lucky!

  Hi Nancy, What would you like to know? Oahu is wonderful although crowded. Lots of condo options--high rise to low rise--in all kinds of price ranges. My sister-in-law is looking into hotel condo conversions. Apparently there are many hotels that are converting parts of themselves into condos. I have favorite spots on Oahu, but there is something great to say about all of it. The only thing I'd try to avoid is noise. Because it is crowded and lots of us live there with the outside being part of the inside you do hear barking dogs and traffic. How exciting. I talked with friends this weekend (he's an attorney with a specialization in real estate) who told me that prices are holding steady in Hawaii right now. They are not suffering the drops in value that we are. Typically, Hawaii is about 6 months behind the Mainland. I'm not sure if this would be a good time to start looking or not. However, I hear that a year ago property going on the market would be snapped up within a week or two. Now the wait time is more like 3 to 6 months. Maybe the mortgage meltdown has had a bit of a brake effect. What a busy school year this has been yet again. Hope you are doing well.

  Yes, Betty is done in June. And so am I. I'd like to get on the sub list for the SRJC libraries. I'm thinking of Marin public library as well. The photo was taken at the summit of Wild Rose Peak in Death Valley. I love it down there. It makes me feel the same way I do on the Big Island--very aware of the earth as a living/changing/dynamic entity. Talk to you soon.
