I'm Mike McQueen, teacher librarian and founder of http://www.GettingBoysToRead.com. Like many school districts, we are in a financial crises. Our school board recently proposed to eliminate ALL 20+ middle school teacher librarians and also cut all 90+ elementary schools to half time. Since we are the biggest district in all of Colorado, we worry this will cause other districts to follow suit. We launched an online movement and are going to do our best to put up a good fight.

Thank you for the great information on Hawaii. Rick and I will investigate the neighborhoods you suggested and those around the University.
I would like to take you to lunch at a restaurant of your choice to celebrate your retirement. I wouldn't have entered the profession had it not been for you and your encouragement. You continue to be my role model! Let me know when things slow down a bit. I am happy to come your way. Also, I am glad to share what I'm learning about being an SRJC's adjunct librarian.

Thanks for your note. We've just started the process of learning about the market in Hawaii. I found a great site (http://www.hicondos.com) that has helped to orient me. It is cool because you can click on a neighborhood and see all the hi-rises on the map. We are kind of intrigued by the downtown area overlooking the harbor, but it just may be too expensive when you add in the monthly fee. I have heard that "fee simple" is the way to go. It looks like 2 bedroom/1 baths are going for a low of $250K in some buildings all the way up to a few million. It looks like there are some nice looking low-rise condos in the Salt Lake area and Makakilo area with distant views of the ocean in the high 200's. What area of O'ahu do you like? Are the neighborhoods more interesting as you get closer to the University? We are in no rush to buy as we don't plan to move anytime soon. We hope to take a trip this summer. The last time we were in Honolulu was about three years ago. We had a great time walking around Chinatown and going to the Royal Hawaiian.
We haven't ruled out other islands, but thought it would be good to live in a city as we get older.
Next month we are going to China over Spring break with the Pleasantan Chamber of Commerce. It's a really good deal ($1599 total - airfare, 4-5 star hotels, tours & food for 9 days). It is partially subsidized by the Chinese government and is part of a PR program to highlight China. We will visit Beijing, the Great Wall, Shanghai and a few additional cities in the south. My brother's friend is the Director of the Chamber. The good thing is that you don't need to be a Pleasanton resident or Chamber member to go. It is part of a program called On To China! They will have another trip in November of 2008 in case you and your husband are interested. I'll be happy to send you a brochure.

Congrats on your upcoming retirement! Sometime I'd like to talk with you about Hawaii. Rick and I are thinking about buying a condo on O'ahu and moving there when we retire in 2019!

What's new at Casa? I saw Betty Purvis last month and she shared that she is planning to retire. Where does the time go?
I am working on Saturdays as a reference librarian at the Doyle Library just until March 15th. It's kinda fun! What an awesome library. Have you been up there to visit?

congratulations! "official." wow! that's another peak you climbed, isn't it? =) well, my spring break is mar. 24-31. can you meet with me then? i can't wait to sit and talk with you one-on-one, but i'd also like to see your library on a school day. let's set a date soon. smiles, anna =)
