  • Greetings Tracy,

I'm Mike McQueen, teacher librarian and founder of http://www.GettingBoysToRead.com. Like many school districts, we are in a financial crises. Our school board recently proposed to eliminate ALL 20+ middle school teacher librarians and also cut all 90+ elementary schools to half time. Since we are the biggest district in all of Colorado, we worry this will cause other districts to follow suit.

We launched an online movement and are going to do our best to put up a good fight. If possible, please visit our Facebook page and "Like" us http://www.facebook.com/SupportSchoolLibraries . Adding a positive comment and sharing with your friends would help our morale as well. The board finalizes the budget soon so your timely support would be greatly appreciated!

    Sincerely,

    Mike McQueen

  • Hi tracy,
I'm a teacher librarian & recently started a community based blog for getting boys to read - http://GettingBoysToRead.com. Please send me a friend request if you'd like to network, share ideas, and learn more about getting boys to read.

    Sincerely,
    Mike McQueen

  • Hi Traci,

I added a comment on your discussion about safe Blogs without realizing that you are from Comox, which I know is in BC. I am used to responding to school library media specialists in the States so I have a tendency of referring to "up here in BC". My apologies for that. It is nice to see a fellow Canadian on this teacher librarian network. We have a growing number of Canadians joining. I hope that when we have sufficient numbers that we can start our own group.

  • Hi Tracy,
It's nice to "meet" another BC'er! How's the weather on the island? Hopefully you don't have the flooding worries that are going on in other parts of the province.

I've never taught an all boys class. How did you find it? I think it would be neat to try. My perspective on boys and the way they learn has changed dramatically since I've had my own two sons. It is one reason I'm so interested in the topic, but I also see that there is a need for looking into supporting male students in my professional work. One of our school growth plan goals is improving reading skills, with an emphasis on our male population. It's nice to have a goal where the library (and the teacher-librarian) can play a big role.
  • Thanks for the positive feedback on the workshop Tracy.
I think it's a bit like when a parent tells their child something but they don't listen until someone in the 'real world' says the same thing. We really enjoyed the Comox bunch!
  • Hi Tracy,
I'm coming to Comox in two weeks with a team from North Vancouver to present Web in the Classroom and Meaning in Data. Will you be attending the session by any chance? It's on May 26th.
  • Hello Tracy,
Today in Winnipeg...no mosquitoes. They are legendary!!

We've visited the Comox area. Very nice. Much of our family is in the Vancouver area.

Have you heard of YackPack? That was what took my attention for an hour or two today. The free tool would seem to be a great way to connect with others using voice messages. Several of us experimented with it today and all were impressed with the ease of use.

    Enjoy your weekend - Margaret
