  • Greetings Buffy,

I'm Mike McQueen, teacher librarian and founder of http://www.GettingBoysToRead.com. Like many school districts, we are in a financial crises. Our school board recently proposed to eliminate ALL 20+ middle school teacher librarians and also cut all 90+ elementary schools to half time. Since we are the biggest district in all of Colorado, we worry this will cause other districts to follow suit. We launched an online movement and are going to do our best to put up a good fight.

If possible, please visit our Facebook page and "Like" us http://www.facebook.com/SupportSchoolLibraries . Adding a positive comment and sharing with your friends would help our morale as well. The board finalizes the budget soon so your timely support would be greatly appreciated!

    Sincerely,

    Mike McQueen

  • Hi Buffy! Thanks for the friend request! Looking forward to more conversations with you.

  • Hi Buffy,
I'm looking for a school librarian who is using Facebook successfully with students...any ideas?
    best,
    debbie
  • Buffy, I attended your online session on widgets. I think you mentioned you used with SharePoint. Is you SP site open? I also use and have some widgets setup but wanted to look at another site. We are still with SP services 2.0 and I am hoping to update soon...
  • Thanks for your reply! I really like the look of TLC but not the price tag. So I am struggling wanting all the bells and whistles. However Desiny looks like my runner up. If you hear of any comparisons let me know.

    Thanks Again,
    Erica
  • Hi Buffy,
I have been following your blog and I love it.
I am currently working on a new library media center for a boy's high school. I noticed that you use Destiny as your automated catalog. Did you look at Alexandria or TLC? If so how do you think they compare?

    Thanks,Erica
  • Hi Buffy,
I'm a teacher librarian & recently started a community based blog for getting boys to read - http://GettingBoysToRead.com. Please send me a friend request if you'd like to network, share ideas, and learn more about getting boys to read.

    Sincerely,
    Mike McQueen

  • Thank you for your kind words! It is such an exciting time to be a librarian...I so love what I do!

We are completely blocked from Ning at work even with our teacher profiles. :-( I hope that will change soon...it wasn't blocked at first, and then suddenly, it was. Arrrgh!

Is Bud in your school district?

I'm sorry I did not get to watch the Sock Puppet Poetry Slam live today b/c we had a class come to the library at the last minute (had to grab that teachable moment!), but I *LOVE* the idea! You are so inspiring!!!!

How many students are in your school? Does Colorado require a certified media specialist in each school? Thankfully, they do here in Georgia, but it makes me nervous to see other states cutting budgets and slashing library staff!

Thank you for inspiring me! :-)
    Buff
  • No worries about the questions. I've enjoyed reading your posts and ideas too. Nice work!

My district blocks Nings except on the teachers profiles (so if I log into a student machine I can't get it)
um, I know I took pictures of the AP Bio pill bug girls, and think I wrote in another Ning about it. (I'll look for it)
Bud talked about me presenting live to our district librarians. Sorry, no video.
However- I'm thinking about doing a video post of our Sock Puppet poetry slam Thursday. I'll keep you posted.

    Keep asking questions!
  • Nice to meet you, too! I hear Colorado is beautiful! I'm a native Georgian...interesting because native Georgians are now the minority in our state's overall population! Our state's population has increased dramatically in the last 10 years. I can't wait to read about Grab N' Gab on your blog later tonight or in the morning! Thank you for sharing! I also loved you post about the Spanish teacher using Voki---I will share this idea with our FL teachers. :-)

    Does your district block Ning?
