Name of Your School / Library / Organization:

I am a librarian for five schools in Springfield, Illinois, serving grades K - 5. Budget cuts six years ago eliminated all of the elementary librarians. Last year, four of us were hired to manage five libraries each. Hope to have a website this year.

  • Greetings Victoria,

I'm Mike McQueen, teacher librarian and founder of http://www.GettingBoysToRead.com. Like many school districts, we are in a financial crises. Our school board recently proposed to eliminate ALL 20+ middle school teacher librarians and also cut all 90+ elementary schools to half time. Since we are the biggest district in all of Colorado, we worry this will cause other districts to follow suit. We launched an online movement and are going to do our best to put up a good fight.

If possible, please visit our Facebook page and "Like" us http://www.facebook.com/SupportSchoolLibraries . Adding a positive comment and sharing with your friends would help our morale as well. The board finalizes the budget soon so your timely support would be greatly appreciated!

    Sincerely,

    Mike McQueen

  • Victoria - I am a children's poet and can I suggest to you and to others in this group that you might like to see the poetry website that I have made for children of all age groups.  If you Google JOSIE'S POEMS you will find it.  I started writing for the children in my local primary school five years ago.  I have now written 850 poems, had 344 chosen two years ago by teachers here and published, and am sending the poems out now via my website.  Do come and say hello and tell me if your children like my poems.  I hope so. I'd be happy to do a short skype visit to your schools or libraries.  I hope this isn't too much of an advertisement but that you will find what I give to you freely useful and enjoyable for yourselves and the children.  I was a teacher and am retired now, but the children in my local school encouraged me to start writing my poems five years ago only, so a new twist in my path of life.  Best wishes to you all.  Josie
  • That's really too bad...that may be our story when we get back to school, too. I hope not, but money will be an issue with us as well. If I can help you locate something in particular, just ask. I'd be happy to try.

  • Hi, Victoria!
You may know about this already, but www.teachingbooks.net is a wonderful database that brings together web resources (and more) for most any children's/YA book you might be looking for. Our county has a subscription for the whole district. The rates are very reasonable. Check out the site. I'm sure you can set up a trial subscription. You'll love it! Hope this helps!
  • Hi Victoria,
I'm a teacher librarian & recently started a community based blog for getting boys to read - http://GettingBoysToRead.com. Please send me a friend request if you'd like to network, share ideas, and learn more about getting boys to read.

    Sincerely,
    Mike McQueen
