I'm a 30 year veteran of school libraries in Canada, LIbya and, for the past 22 years, in Bangkok. I love the work but I'm in a quandry. I've had a life-long fascination with the evolution of information services and I'm WOWed by the accelerating pace of change, but I'm apprehensive about the future of traditional reading and literature. I"m also passionate about our individual and collective responsibility to prepare today's children to be better stewards of the earth than previous generations have been. Greetings Rob,
I'm Mike McQueen, teacher librarian and founder of http://www.GettingBoysToRead.com. Like many school districts, we are in a financial crises. Our school board recently proposed to eliminate ALL 20+ middle school teacher librarians and also cut all 90+ elementary schools to half time. Since we are the biggest district in all of Colorado, we worry this will cause other districts to follow suit. We launched an online movement and are going to do our best to put up a good fight.
If possible, please visit our Facebook page and "Like" us http://www.facebook.com/SupportSchoolLibraries . Adding a positive comment and sharing with your friends would help our morale as well. The board finalizes the budget soon so your timely support would be greatly appreciated!
Sincerely,
Mike McQueen

I'm still away... had my interview yesterday. The interview itself went well but this is a bilingual school and my French might not be quite good enough to use in teaching. but, we will see what happens! About the Skype call... oh no! I wonder what happen with Michele running the call? I really want to make this work better. Will email when I return to school on Friday.
Sounds good. I will plan to meet my kids at 10:30 my time (yes, should be 11:30 your time) on Monday. Let's not try for a Skype session just yet, but see if we might either get on the Ning concurrently, or perhaps you and I could Twitter. Even if we don't have too many kids yet on either side, we could establish a routine and build from that.
It was great meeting you in Shanghai. I will send out an inquiry email to HS students plus speak with a few key individuals who may be interested in the Writer's Group. Will you begin it next Monday at 10:30 your time (11:30 my time?) I will write back within a couple days and let you know if I have people interested.
Talk to you soon,
Mary Alice
