McKenna: Volunteers good, librarian better

MARY ELLEN MCKENNA,

Northborough

Daily News Tribune - September 24th

The Daily News Tribune, from Needham, Massachusetts has posted an article from a mother who writes a response to another article posted September 18th ("Check this out: Volunteers help keep elementary school libraries open in Ashland.").

While she admits that she would probably do the same thing she does recognize the importance of having school librarians.

Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest 2009 Results

Hello everyone,

With summer upon us, I offer you some light but interesting reading.

From the Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest website:

An international literary parody contest, the competition honors the memory (if not the reputation) of Victorian novelist Edward George Earl Bulwer-Lytton (1803-1873). The goal of the contest is childishly simple: entrants are challenged to submit bad opening sentences to imaginary novels. Although best known for "The Last Days of… Continue

Cuts don't reflect words

We just had a provincial election in BC and, one of the issues that was front and centre, was funding cuts to school districts. While cutbacks in my own district were not as drastic as in Bellevue, Washington, they are serious for our school libraries. Starting next fall, there will be no full time teacher librarians in any of the elementary or middle schools in the district and we are losing our district librarian. I wrote a letter to the editor of a local paper in response to a statement of… Continue

Greetings Richard,

I'm Mike McQueen, teacher librarian and founder of http://www.GettingBoysToRead.com. Like many school districts, we are in a financial crises. Our school board recently proposed to eliminate ALL 20+ middle school teacher librarians and also cut all 90+ elementary schools to half time. Since we are the biggest district in all of Colorado, we worry this will cause other districts to follow suit. We launched an online movement and are going to do our best to put up a good fight.

If possible, please visit our Facebook page and "Like" us http://www.facebook.com/SupportSchoolLibraries . Adding a positive comment and sharing with your friends would help our morale as well. The board finalizes the budget soon so your timely support would be greatly appreciated!

Sincerely,

Mike McQueen
