Name of Your School / Library / Organization:

I have been in international education for 10 years, primarily as a librarian, in Turkey, Guatemala and now Singapore. Before that I was a middle school English teacher in and around the Chicago area. Contrary to the rumour at our school, I have not read ALL of the books on my shelves, but I have read a good many and continue to work my way through. YA Lit is my favourite vacation reading!

  • Greetings Lisa,

I'm Mike McQueen, teacher librarian and founder of http://www.GettingBoysToRead.com. Like many school districts, we are in a financial crises. Our school board recently proposed to eliminate ALL 20+ middle school teacher librarians and also cut all 90+ elementary schools to half time. Since we are the biggest district in all of Colorado, we worry this will cause other districts to follow suit. We launched an online movement and are going to do our best to put up a good fight. If possible, please visit our Facebook page and "Like" us http://www.facebook.com/SupportSchoolLibraries . Adding a positive comment and sharing with your friends would help our morale as well. The board finalizes the budget soon so your timely support would be greatly appreciated!

    Sincerely,

    Mike McQueen

  • I went to Judson College in Elgin. The first year I taught I was in Chicago on North Cicero. I then taught in Elgin for 4 years before we moved to Cincinnati. We still have a lot of friends in the Chicago area and love to visit! One of my students this year in Singapore moved here from Chicago this past fall. Of course, the family are huge Bears and Cubs fans! I sure do miss those teams, although we did get to see a few of their games on ESPN here in Singapore last fall. A friend of mine just placed a bunch of pictures of snow from Chicago this past weekend on facebook. That is another thing I really miss! This is our first year overseas. We'll be here for at least 3 years. After that, who knows! We have a teacher in our complex who teaches kindergarten at the Canadian school. Her name is Jackie. We haven't seen them much since school started and after we bought a car. I guess her husband is at another campus. They seem really nice. It's nice to make a connection with someone else in Singapore!...By the way, I loved your response about you handle students wanting to check out books that might not be age appropriate yet. I plan to do the same thing next year!
  • Hi Lisa! My name is Marjorie (Margie) Kennedy. I, too, live in Singapore! We moved here in July. I am currently a 3rd grade teacher and will become our librarian next year. I, too, have lived and taught in the Chicago area for more than 10 years. Any way, I hope to meet you sometime so that we can network.
  • Ooops, just realized you're in Singapore now--not Turkey. Someone started following me on Twitter from Turkey today, so I thought it might have been you. You on Twitter? It's a great resource! You can follow me at DearLibrariAnn.
  • Hi there! Welcome to this group;) I'll be in Istanbul in about 2 weeks visiting a friend after the NESA conference in Cairo. Will you be going?
