Name of Your School / Library / Organization:

Hi, I have proudly called myself a librarian for 17 years now. After several years as a Public Reference Librarian, I switched gears to become a Teacher Librarian, and I am the happiest that I have ever been in my career. I care passionately about our profession and openly express my views. I am particularly interested in Web 2.0 and the ever changing role of technology in education. How has it changed what we believe? or teach? I really try to foster a love for reading by using technology as a conduit for book discussions like using student blogs and wikis.

  • Greetings Laura,

I'm Mike McQueen, teacher librarian and founder of http://www.GettingBoysToRead.com. Like many school districts, we are in a financial crises. Our school board recently proposed to eliminate ALL 20+ middle school teacher librarians and also cut all 90+ elementary schools to half time. Since we are the biggest district in all of Colorado, we worry this will cause other districts to follow suit. We launched an online movement and are going to do our best to put up a good fight. If possible, please visit our Facebook page and "Like" us http://www.facebook.com/SupportSchoolLibraries . Adding a positive comment and sharing with your friends would help our morale as well. The board finalizes the budget soon so your timely support would be greatly appreciated!

    Sincerely,

    Mike McQueen

  • Laura,

Congratulations on your little boy! I'm so happy for you. And I have to admit, I'm a bit jealous of you in Ann Arbor, enjoying winter and the great mid-west. (Can you tell I miss Ohio?)

I'm not traveling to DC as much, but you're right, I was visiting there for various singing jobs.

    Take care!

    Lisa
  • Hi Laura,

It's great to know of you through this, although I have to admit, I've been spending more of my time in another ning community.

Hope you are well. Let me know how things are with you.

Much has changed, as you probably know from Sandy. The new building is amazing as is our library.

    Keep in touch!

    Lisa
  • i am not sure if i ever got back to you...constant interruptions haven't changed but I memory of what I have completed has gone by the by.

Congratulations on your little one...that is very exciting. Yes, there are pix of the new upper school on our web site under about Haverford.
  • Hi Laura,
I've been thinking about you since I read your article in LMC. How are you doing? It sounds like you are enjoying your work. I hope all else is going well too. We just moved into a new upper school and have a two story library in the upper school. It's interesting as we navigate the new space and try to figure out how to make it work best. I am first starting to just blogs and ning and such...so this is one of my first forays into it. Any suggestions are always welcome.
    Fondly, Sandy
  • When I was a boy, libarians wore sensible shoes and their eyeglasses hung from a chain.

And it was quiet in the library.
  • Welcome!!
