I'm working as a circulation/reference clerk at a public library in Louisiana. I really enjoy what I do, but I would love to work with children in an educational setting. I'm hoping to become a school librarian in the near future.

  • Greetings Lacey,

I'm Mike McQueen, teacher librarian and founder of http://www.GettingBoysToRead.com. Like many school districts, we are in a financial crises. Our school board recently proposed to eliminate ALL 20+ middle school teacher librarians and also cut all 90+ elementary schools to half time. Since we are the biggest district in all of Colorado, we worry this will cause other districts to follow suit. We launched an online movement and are going to do our best to put up a good fight.

If possible, please visit our Facebook page and "Like" us http://www.facebook.com/SupportSchoolLibraries . Adding a positive comment and sharing with your friends would help our morale as well. The board finalizes the budget soon so your timely support would be greatly appreciated!

    Sincerely,

    Mike McQueen

  • Enthusiasm and positive attitudes will take you very far in education. They are contagious and the kids usually get caught with the "bug".

It is often stressful, but the successes and connections that we make with kids and for our kids with other cultures and languages make it so worthwhile.

One piece of advice that I do have is... remember to take time for you! You could work on schoolwork 24/7 and still not be done. Start small and modify every year based on what you learn as you teach.

    Good luck!
