school news paper

I have presented an idea to my principal about creating a school newspaper, maybe monthly.   I would appreciate any contributions on the sections we should should have.  I want it to be student created (3rd, 4th, and 5th). I want to include a cartoonist comic section, a trivia section (maybe on an author of the month), then a research article on important events that are occuring that month.  After that I'm out of ideas.  I would like the students to pick some categories on their own, but would like to have a good baseline.  Any other suggestions on how to run this thing?

  • Jessica's idea is great. I'd love to be interviewed also. I've just had 5 books published, with 344 poems chosen by local teachers. Oh the writing of the poems isn't hard, but the marketing of them in this economic climate is really hard!!! In the meantime, many poems are on my website for classrooms to try. Cara, I really do wish you well for I think your idea is great in every way!!! Good luck and I hope it all goes well. Google JOSIE'S POEMS.
  • A sports section is always good, and maybe having a teacher interview section would be nice, where students could interview a teacher and learn a little bit more about them (mainly, that they are in fact human and not just teaching machines :) ).
    • Oh thats a wonderful idea! I hadn't thought of an interview as a part of research, but it most def. is! Thanks so much!
