Othello

I am trying to find a modern language version of Othello for my 8th grade class.  The themes really seem that they will resonate well with this group, but other than the horrible movie O and cliff notes versions I am kind of at a loss.  Anyone have a graphic novel, site, movie, something that is true to the theme of the original Othello?  Thanks in advance!

  • Have you looked at shmoop.com?
  • I've used the "short stories" from Tina Packer's beautiful Tales from Shakespeare with my 8th grade classes. The stories are written in modern English, but woven in are some original Shakspearean lines from the play. I always found it very accessible and easy to understand, yet the overall themes are still present.

    Good luck.
  • How about Othello by Julius Lester (Scholastic, 1998)? Alas, it is out of print, but used copies are easy to come by.

Excellent review from School Library Journal -- "[Lester's] prose is an incredibly skillful blend of his own words and Shakespeare's, both paraphrased and quoted directly, interwoven seamlessly into a narrative that transmutes the musical feeling of Shakespeare's language into modern English."

And it is one of ALA's Best Books For Young Adults -- you can't go wrong there!
