getting boys to read

I am asking for incentives to get boys to read.  My school (unfortunately) is an A.R. participating school, and try as I might boys so often gravitate towards comic books, which are not "testable" and non-fiction which they simply browse through and I find the tests to be a bit more challenging which in turn causes them to be reluctant to test on them.  Does anyone have any incentive programs specifically geared toward boys?

  • Hello Cara

Have you tried them with short rhyming poems, especially funny poems at first? I write poetry and a parent has just commented in my guestbook and this is what she said:
"Hi Josie, just wanted to say how much my 2 children and I love your poems. My daughter, Lauren, who's 11 loves all the nature poems, especially 'An Ostrich Named Eril'. Adam who is 7, loves all the funny poems and much to my delight will actually ask to read them. This is miraculous as far as I'm concerned, because it has always been a struggle to get him to read. I will be recommending your books to all my friends and the childrens schools. Thanks from Clare." You might like to try some from my website with them. Good luck and I do hope I can help. Let me know. Josie
