Hey there! Next month we will start a new project at our University, involving the contribution to 5 different charities. We already found 3 organizations: one that deals with protecting wildlife, another one that is about building schools in various countries in Africa and the last one has to do with recycled products. My question here is: does anyone know another good cause, but from another field than the three we already have? And more important: ways to collect money for charity? Any idea is welcome!!!

Mia,
I recently volunteered with a local community development organization in rural Tanzania that is trying to build a library and community center in its village. They are also working on women's empowerment programs for both the Meru and Maasai communities and building cultural awareness programs for the area. Any of these might be a great addition to your project goals for the New Year! Please let me know if you would like additional information and I will be happy to put you in contact with the coordinator.
What about the African Library Project which partners with volunteers in African communities to create small libraries for African schools and villages? U.S. children recycle their books in order to share the gift of reading with children in Africa. The donated books are collected in the U.S. through book drives organized by volunteer schools and non-profit organizations. The books are shipped directly to the communities who request them. African Library Project volunteers worked during the 2007-08 academic year to start or improve 106 small libraries in Africa. Now in our third year, the African Library Project has shipped a total of 250,000 books from 167 book drives to start 228 library projects in seven African countries. The contact person is Chris Bradshaw (info@africanlibraryproject.org) and the Web link is: http://africanlibraryproject.org/index.php
