A message from Barbara Etchingham to all members of Private School Librarians on TLNing!

I work in a 5-12 library which will be completely redesigned in the next few years.  The facilities people and the architects have already begun circulating their ideas and my biggest concern is that they are only thinking of this as an Upper School Library and not one that needs to meet the needs of 10-13 year-olds as well. My library is in the Upper School building; Middle Schoolers come over via a bridge.  Since Upper School students have many more free periods than Middle School students have study halls, it's easy to see how this space is perceived as Upper School turf.

I am hoping to find out how my colleagues in the 5-12 school library world handle the needs of these very different groups. It's my hope to create a variety of different spaces in our new design including an area that's specifically for Middle School students.

Your thoughts?  many thanks in advance.
