I just read this old HIT on LMNET and it got me thinking.

What if I didn't limit checkout of books for my K-4 students?
I really agree with the philosophy here.
What do you think? What do you do?
I currently run a K-4 library with about 440 students, I see each class once a week and have no library admin. time. Yep, that's right. My volunteers, luckily, have been dependable at shelving.

We just increased the limit of books to check out to 3 for grades 3-5 and 2 for grades 1-2. Kindergarten may only check out 1 once a week. I am new so I need to go through this first year before I change things. I think Carl has a good point that it would be unrealistic for them to take out 10 books. I think it would teach them more responsibility. Thanks for the discussion. Something for me to think about.
We limit checkout to 1 book to KDGN, 2 for Grades 1 - 3, and 4 for Grades 4 - 6, but children are welcome anytime to return a book and check out anytime besides their class's weekly library time. Many of our students are newcomers and there's a lot "on their plates" as they acclimate. I've felt the "limits" are reasonable in view of the fact that they can always return books early and get new ones.
