Building a New Elementary Library

Hello Everyone! We will be building a new elementary school library in the next couple of years and I am trying to be proactive in collecting information. I would love to tour some elementary libraries this summer that have amazing 21st century libraries, see pictures of some of the layouts or just get tips from some other librarians. Any suggestions? I have read Doug Johnson's article on Building Digital Libraries.

  • Hi Jennifer,

We are in the process of designing a new elementary school AND new library, of course, in my district as well.

In preparation, I am reviewing and reflecting on some of my past design experiences on the Blue Skunk and have compiled a short bibliography of things I've written on the topic here:

I'll continue to explore the issues surrounding facility design in the blog so stay tuned!

All the best and good luck,

    Doug
    • Thanks Doug! I didn't expect to get a reply from the library guru himself! I bookmarked your Blue Skunk page and will continue to check back. I read some of the articles and plan to share them with my Head of School. I looked at the pictures of some of the libraries you mentioned and I am going to try to visit some libraries in the Nashville area. Harpeth Hall mentioned on their website that they won an AASL library of the year so that is one I would like to visit. Have a great day! Jennifer
