Quality School Library Programs

Questions to ponder: Hi everyone I have a few questions I want to open up for discussion: In your personal opinion, what makes a good library media center? And in your opinion, how can it be measured? Thanks for your thoughts and for your participation :)

  • Hi Tammy,

In Canada, the Canadian Association for School Libraries (CASL) published "Achieving Information Literacy: Standards for School Library Programs in Canada" in 2003. It has been used as a reference for provincial documents that are being written in Canada.

An example: Research Centre Report #09-01: School Libraries in Saskatchewan - An Advisory for School Boards (2009) is now available at the following website: http://www.saskschoolboards.ca/old/ResearchAndDevelopment/ResearchR...

The CASL book is not available online and we are in the process of preparing a second edition.

The AIL book can give you some idea of the standards that we hope school libraries in Canada will adopt.

  • The Colorado Power Library Program might be a wonderful resource for you. Power Libraries are identified through an application process each year, and a board of directors applies a carefully crafted rubric (found at the link above) to determine if a particular school library program meets the criteria for "developing" or "high performance." The criteria in the rubric are of course based on the principles and best practices outlined in Information Power.
